Fox- Cue groans from the crowd.
Former Colorado governor and 2020 Democratic hopeful John Hickenlooper sought to flip the script when asked during a CNN town hall Wednesday night if he would choose a female running mate, as some of his male competitors have vowed to do.
“Of course,” Hickenlooper, 67, said.
However, he wasn’t done.
“Well, I’ll ask you another question,” he continued. “But how come we’re not asking more often the women, ‘Would you be willing to put a man on the ticket?”
Hickenlooper’s question drew groans from the Atlanta audience.
Lauren Hitt, a spokesperson for Hickenlooper, tweeted about the comment.
“Making the point that the media too often discounts the chances of women winning the nomination themselves,” she tweeted.
It doesn’t matter which way you lean politically, everyone can agree the American political system is all sorts of messed up. Nothing will change unless another Civil War breaks out so wasting breathe on it isn’t worth it, but it needs to be addressed nonetheless.
John Hickenlooper, a hopeful democratic nominee for 2020, was asked if he would consider appointing a woman VP, and he responded with asking why women candidates aren’t being questioned about appointing male candidates.
First off, both parties here are right and wrong. Gender equality is still being fought today and rightfully so. If a woman gets passed over for an less qualified man there should be repercussions. And Hickenlooper is right to question if there is a gender driven agenda being pushed to creative that narrative a year before the election cycle really heats up.
But the issue lies within the notion that we need to elect people based on their sex and not their qualifications. When Betsy Devos was appointed as the head of the education department she was qualified. Whether or not you agree with her stances is up for you to decide, but she had a long history in the education system with decades of experience. Had she been working as a McDonalds manager and hired to appease the presidents female base, there would be an issue.
What the American people, and those elected to positions of power, need to understand is that the best person should be hired for the job. Appeasing a certain sect of voters and giving someone a position based on what chromosome they contain is one of the biggest issues in our political system. If every single position was filled by a qualified woman I would be elated! As long as they know what they’re doing I don’t care if they’re a man, woman, goat, horse, dog, etc. Just put someone in place that can fix problems.
