Is High School Musical A Rip-Off Of American Pie?

The first question you may have for me is, “Are you high?” No. Well, maybe. But that’s not why this makes sense.

I was scrolling Netflix last night looking for something other than The Office to fall asleep to. I stumbled on all of the American Pies; even the bad ones like Naked Mile and Beta House, and tossed the first one on.

I forgot how incredibly awkward the opening scene of the movie was and Eugene Levy played it perfectly. Anyways that’s not the point of this blog.

After the crew makes their sex pact Chris Ostreicher, noted lacrosse star, football player, and triple hitter, joins the jazz club to “Show off his sensitive side.” Ok buddy. You saw Heather from across the hall and wanted to impress her.

So we have a star high school athlete, playing for the state title, that joins a singing club to impress a girl. Oh, and he has to leave his game in order to make it to the singing competition that happens on the same day. Sound familiar?

Troy Bolton, teen heartthrob from known basketball factory New Mexico also happens to be a high school sports star and proceeds to joins a singing club to, wait for it… impress a girl. She sees him practicing, like Heather did with Oz, and takes him serious. UNTIL, like Heather, she sees him clowning around with his teammates and disregards him. Only for Troy to concoct a plan to make it to the final audition that happens to be at the same time and place as his state championship game- just like America Pie!

These frauds! I’ll admit, I loved High School Musical. Everyone had a crush on Vanessa Hudgens. Everyone except me, that is. I had a crush on Zac Efron. I loved the story, the pageantry, the love interest. And none of it was true. It was all stolen from a movie that (shockingly) only came out 6 years prior. I demand repercussions!
