Why Josh Rosen Won’t Be A Patriot

With the Kyler Murray hype train at full speed it seems like Arizona is going to take Kyler first overall. That means the end of the Rosen era in Arizona. It was a glorious season where Rosen threw for 2,300 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Not a stat line that makes you go “Whoa.” In his defense, his offensive line was historically bad, David Johnson stunk, and Larry Fitzgerald cannot carry a receiving core at this stage of his career.

A lot of people have speculated that a potential destination for Rosen is New England. And while I may like the idea of Rosen sitting and learning behind Tom for a few years and taking the reigns, I don’t believe the important people in Foxboro think the same way.

For starters, it will most likely cost more than the floated third round pick for Rosen. Tyrod Taylor was worth a 3 last year, and you’re telling me a top-10 pick who is only 22 is on the same level as him? Don’t think so. The Cardinals will be pressed to move him if they take Kyler, yes, but someone (Chargers, Dolphins?) will give them more than just a 3.

But lets say they do take a 3 for Rosen. I still don’t think the Patriots pull the trigger. Shortly before the draft last year it was leaked that Josh McDaniels, the presumed coach-in-waiting when Belichick retires, had a private workout with Baker Mayfield. Baker, Rosen, Darnold, and Allen were the best QB’s in the draft last year and Baker was the only one Josh worked out. Wouldn’t he have worked out a few of the others if they were willing to trade up for Baker if he thought they were worth it?

Why would the (possible) next coach hitch himself to someone he doesn’t like?

They hit it out of the park with Jimmy G. Only problem is that it was 4 years too early. Rosen isn’t the QB of the future in New England. Nobody knows who it will be. That guy might not even be in this draft. But whoever it is, Josh will have handpicked himself because he sees what he wants in that guy- and that person isn’t Josh Rosen.
