With AFC teams adding guys like crazy the last few days and the Pats losing two very good starters to free agency, people are starting to ramp up their free agency takes regarding the Patriots. “They’re not doing enough!” “They have no talent!” “Everyone’s getting better and they’re getting worse!” We go through the same song and dance every march, and come February when the Patriots are back in the Super Bowl we wonder why we lost our collective minds in the first place.
The Chiefs added Tryann matthieu. The Jets signed Le’Veon Bell. The Browns traded for everyone. Meanwhile, Trey Flowers and Trent Brown signed lucrative deals elsewhere and the Pats have resigned John Simon and brought back Brandon Bolden. But does that guy look worried? He knows two things:
He is far and away the best coach in the NFL. There is nobody close to rivaling him, and whoever you decide to put in second place is miles behind him. The golden boy Sean Mcvay marveled at him and literally gushed about him to his face in the Super Bowl. Andy Reid doesn’t know how to win a big game. I mean, who else is there? Harbaugh? Nagy? Pederson? Sure, all good coaches. Nowhere near as good as Bill, and he knows it. He can take anyone and make them into a good NFL player. Go ahead and blow all your money on three guys- he’ll take scraps and turn them into Filet Mignon.
And he still has Tom Brady. Baker, Mahomes, Darnold, Allen- all good to great young quarterbacks. Nobody is as good as Tom. Not Brees. Not Rodgers. Hampered by a knee injury for the first 10-12 weeks of the season, the cliff talk was at its highest. But if you paid close attention you’d see that from week 12 through the Super Bowl he played at his 2017 MVP level.
You can have all the other guys. I, and Bill, will take the 42 year old stud that doesn’t stop winning over all of them. Bill knows any faults can and will be covered up-for the most part- by himself and Tom.
And they will add some pieces. I still think Golden Tate ends up in New England. I think Gronk comes back. They’re getting their entire draft class from last year back from injury, and have 12 picks in this years draft. And they’re usually good for one semi-big move every offseason. Come September this roster will still have less talent as others. But that doesn’t matter because Bill and Tom are still the best at what they do until someone steps up and stops them.
